STR is the new term for the vacation rental properties with NO owner residing on the property with the rental units. The owner might live elsewhere on Maui, or they might live on the mainland and employ a professional property manager. In the past these properties were referred to as TVR’s.
As of June 2011, legislation for short term rental homes is being worked on by the Planning Department. We thank the Arakawa administration and the new County Council for understanding the importance of introducing an ordinance to legal these rentals. The industry has been waiting for more than twenty years!
Community and industry input was collected at the Planning Commission meeting in June 2011. The Planning Commissions will add their input to the ordinance that is now headed back to the Planning Committee, and ultimately on to the full County Council.
It should be noted that most STR owners contribute substantially to the economy every year. They purchase goods and services on the island, and unlike B&B owners that do most of the work on their property, the STR owners hire gardeners, cleaners, maintenance staff, reservation agents, and pool cleaners. In most cases 100% of the vacation rental income is spent in the local economy.
